Food hygiene ratings
Find out if a restaurant, takeaway or food business has good food hygiene standards.
How the scheme works
Our inspector visits a food business to see how closely the business meets food hygiene law. The inspector considers:
- how hygienically food is handled
- the condition and cleanliness of the buildings
- what is done to make sure food is safe
The inspector will give the business one of six ratings.
Food hygiene rating | What the rating means |
5 |
Very good |
4 |
Good |
3 |
Generally satisfactory |
2 |
Improvement necessary |
1 |

0 |

Following the inspection, businesses are given a sticker with their rating. Look out for these when you visit a food business.

The Food hygiene ratings scheme is run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (external website).
