Business rates: material change
Business rates and "material change"
Business rates are payable based on the rateable value of each property. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA), part of Inland revenue, sets rateable values. Businesses can appeal against their rateable value if there has been a "material change" to an area or property.
If you believe that there has been a "material change" affecting your business then you may appeal to VOA. VOA will investigate whether a temporary reduction in rateable value is appropriate.
