Consultation: licensing of wheelchair accessible vehicles
24 August 2018
We are consulting on proposed changes to the licensing system relating to wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Purpose and detail
You are invited to comment on proposed changes to the licensing system relating to wheelchair accessible vehicles which may affect you. Provisions of the Equalities Act 2010 came into force in April 2017 which provide local authorities with the power to publish a list of licensed vehicles, both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, which are wheelchair accessible.
The publication of such a list would provide vehicle licensee’s contact details on the Council’s website to enable users to make booking more easily. The new legislation also creates offences for any driver of a wheelchair accessible vehicle on the list to fail to carry a wheelchair user (whether in or out of their wheelchair), to fail to provide assistance to a wheelchair user or to charge a wheelchair user more than an able bodied person.
Your views are sought on the proposed publication of the list and any comments you may have regarding its possible benefits or otherwise.
