Housing team investigates unlicensed HMOs in Wycombe

 The WDC private sector housing team has reported a successful start to its investigation of unlicensed houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) across Wycombe.

Last week, the private sector housing team joined up with partners from the Bucks Fire and Rescue Service, Housing Options and Trading Standards to conduct inspections and advise tenants on living standards and fire safety. A number of properties were found to require a licence and the Council began receiving applications from landlords within 24 hours.

In some properties emergency action was taken to fit smoke alarms and the team’s two-day initiative resulted in 27 individuals now being protected by smoke alarms. The housing team has more inspections planned for later this month and in 2019.

Landlords are encouraged to find out if their property is classified as an HMO and to apply for a licence as soon as possible. Failure to do so could result in penalties, conviction or fines up to £30,000.
