Medallists confirmed for Olympic celebration
Rowing great Katherine Grainger and Marlow’s gold medal winning hockey star, Alex Danson, are among the athletes confirmed for the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations in Higginson Park, Marlow on Sunday 2 October.
Fresh from adding silver to her collection in Rio, five-time Olympic medallist and Marlow Rowing Club member Katherine Grainger will meet the crowds in Higginson Park in Marlow between 2 and 3pm on Sunday.
Marlow resident Alex Danson can also expect a hero’s welcome after she scored five goals to propel Team GB’s hockey team to a historic gold in Brazil.
Talented teenage shooter Amber Hill, who narrowly missed out on a medal after reaching the semi-finals of the skeet, is also confirmed - as is London 2012 Paralympic champion Naomi Riches following the Marlow resident’s successful world record row of the River Thames last week.
Further athletes are expected to be added to the line up later this week: follow @WycombeDC (external website) on Twitter for updates.
Wycombe District Council Chairman Cllr Mahboob Hussain said:
"The whole country is so proud of the amazing success of our Olympians and Paralympians.
"The fact that this area has produced, and will continue to produce, elite sportsmen and women who compete at national and international level is something that everyone in the Wycombe district can be proud of.
"As well as the personal skills, talent and dedication of each of the individual sports men and women, we are also celebrating the dedication of the people who have also played a big part in that success too.
"Our event on Sunday 2 October is about celebrating the achievement and success, and saluting our athletes, as well as all the people who have played a part in their sports careers and who will continue to play a part in supporting the Olympians and Paralympians of the future."
Marlow FM will introduce and interview the athletes by Court Garden House in Higginson Park at about 2pm before residents of the district will be given their chance to pose for photos and congratulate our Olympic and Paralympic heroes.
