What is RSS?

RSS news feeds deliver the latest news directly to your computer. RSS or "really simple syndication" refers to the format used for feeds.

How to use news feeds

To use a feed, you will need a piece of software called a "news reader". This displays the latest headlines from all the websites you have selected, in one place. If you are interested in a headline, click on it to read the full story on the website.

News readers and how to get one

A range of news readers are available, some of these are browser-based and some are applications that you can download.

Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you'll need to choose one that will work on your computer. Some news readers are available free of charge and some offer a free trial-period so you can try before you buy.

If you have a Google, Yahoo or MSN account, you can set up and use feeds using this.

How to subscribe to news feeds

RSS IconFeeds are usually indicated with an orange icon.

Some browsers automatically check for RSS news feeds on the website you are looking at. If they find a feed, they display the orange icon.

When you find a feed you're interested in, you can subscribe to it in several ways. Please note, not all news readers support these methods.

  • Copy and paste the web address of the RSS page into your news reader
  • Drag the web address of the RSS feed into your news reader (if supported)
  • Drag the orange icon into your news reader (if supported)
  • Some feeds offer one-click subscription for browser-based readers; click on the appropriate link for your reader
