Council car park artwork revamp

18 June 2010

The Swan car park in High Wycombe has welcomed graffiti artwork of a different kind in a bid to help promote looking after the environment and energy efficiency.

Wycombe District Council Parking Services teamed up with Wycombe Youth Action to rejuvenate and create four pieces of street art, situated in the Swan car park's stairwell to promote the 'being green' message.

The boards, donated by a local company were designed and painted by talented artists Tom Lloyd and Dien Holland from Wycombe Youth Action. They took six hours to complete and each display a different environmental message.

The initiative, set up by Wycombe District Council Parking Services gave young people in the Wycombe district the opportunity to create themed street art in a safe and legal environment, highlighting the successes of partnership working within the district.

Currently The Swan car park and the majority of Wycombe district Council car parks hold Safer Parking Awards (Park Mark®) awarded by the British Parking Association, who recognise car parks that take steps to reduce the fear of crime and create a safer parking environment.

Councillor Clive Harriss, cabinet member for wellbeing and neighbourhoods commented, "We at Wycombe District Council are always keen to connect with local youth groups, and work with them to improve the Wycombe district. Wycombe Youth Action's involvement is a classic example of how controlled graffiti can be used as a modern art medium to communicate an environmental message, whilst brightening some of the districts' locations."
