Recycling rewards for Buckinghamshire’s ‘sparkiest’ schools

10 June 2010

Set unwanted electricals free this Recycle Week, 21 to 27 June

Local schools in Buckinghamshire are participating in a campaign to boost electrical recycling during Recycle Week, where prizes are up for grabs to the 'sparkiest' school in the region.

The week, which is being promoted by the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire will focus on 'Rewards for Schools'. It will involve local schools in the area raising the awareness of small electrical items such as hairdryers, kids toys, kitchen appliances and power tools that can be recycled. Schools will be asking the local community to make a pledge to recycle their household items in the run up to Recycle Week.

Each of us accumulates three new electrical items each year on average, or 173 million nationally, but only one in five of our small electricals gets recycled.

By following through the pledges and recycling unwanted or broken electrical items during the week, residents will receive a reward token which can be used to benefit a local school of their choice. Schools collecting the most tokens will receive garden centre vouchers to help them improve their outdoor space.

You can visit www.recyclenow.com (opens in a new window) to find out about what you can recycle, as well as your nearest electricals recycling point.

Bill Lidgate, Chairman of Buckinghamshire's Joint Waste Committee said, "The County has ten household waste recycling centres, all of which accept electrical items for recycling. I would like to encourage householders to participate in Recycle Week by taking those unwanted or broken items to the recycling centre as this will help your local school to win some fantastic prizes."

If you are unable to get to your local recycling centre and have items in working order, Recycle Now is partnering with British Heart Foundation Furniture & Electrical Stores who will accept any small electrical item that can switch on.
