Chairman of Wycombe District Council joins waste collection crew
30 July 2010
The Chairman of Wycombe District Council, Councillor Bill Bendyshe-Brown, joined a waste collection crew on their round (Friday 30 July). He joined the crew as they set off from the depot at 06.30 and joined the operatives on their rounds in Longwick and Bourne End.
Inspired by the recent Channel 4 programme where senior managers visit the shop floor of their organisation, the Chairman of Wycombe District Council accompanied the waste collection crew to meet some of the people involved in delivering services for the council around the district. He got a 'grass roots' feel for some of the day to day work which is carried out by Wycombe District Council and its contractors.
The Chairman was out with a crew collecting grey bins containing household waste. Last year in the Wycombe district we sent a total of 37,476 tonnes of household waste to landfill.
Almost two thirds of households in the district can divert mixed food and garden waste from landfill using the green wheeled bin scheme.
Last year the district collected 12,861 tonnes of organic waste through the green wheeled bin scheme - meaning that each of the 42,500 households with green wheeled bins diverted on average 304Kg of organic material away from landfill - that's the equivalent to the weight of 3.5 standard fridge freezers or 4.5 average men.
Reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill should be our first consideration. Reusing waste where possible is an ideal way to save you money and recycling your waste helps divert precious resources from landfill - helping the environment.
