Marlow Common revamp

20 July 2010

Bursting with wildlife the newly refurbished Marlow Common welcomes all to its recently rejuvenated site. During the last five years the 10 hectare (26.5 acre) site, owned and managed by Wycombe District Council's Woodland Service has undergone some important conservation and restoration work.

The Woodland Service and its partners have worked together to help reinstate a variety of old and new features to the area. A once 'lost' footpath has been restored and now joins with other paths across the common, whilst areas of Laurel are being cleared to encourage native plant species to flourish. The Chiltern Society, as part of the 'donate-a-gate' scheme with Bucks County Council, have also helped improve the accessibility of the area by replacing Marlow Common's old stile with a new kissing gate.

To help visitors make the most of their time at Marlow Common and experience the varied wildlife the area has to offer, a new interpretation board (can be downloaded below) has been installed at the entrance of the site giving information on the wildlife visitors should look out for.

Cabinet member for Younger and Older People Councillor Richard Scott, commented, "The Woodland Service have made real progress working together with the local community and partner organisations to improve Marlow Common for local people and wildlife in the area. With continued management and opportunities for members of the community to discover, explore and enjoy, the future looks promising for Marlow Common."

The Woodland Service and its partners have also worked hard to educate local businesses and schools on their environmental responsibility, introducing them to the area's wildlife and highlighting the dangers of illegally dumped waste.

Later this year, a new Marlow Common information leaflet will be produced to give visitors more information about the area and will be available free of charge from the Marlow Tourist Information Centre and from the Wycombe District Council website.

Look out for the popular Fungal Foray later in the year, places are limited and fill up fast so please book early to avoid disappointment.
