Planning decisions
Planning decisions impact on people, the environment and our economy. We give wide publicity to planning applications and welcome the views of the public so that these can be taken into account when applications are decided.
Complex or controversial planning applications are considered by the Planning Committee, but most applications (over 90%) are decided under powers delegated to the Head of Planning & Sustainability by the Committee. District councillors may also request that an application is decided by the Committee. You may therefore wish to make your views known to the councillor for your district as well as our planning department.
Planning appeals
See our planning appeals page for a current list of appeals determined.
Information about different types of planning appeals can be found on the Planning Portal website via the link below.
Planning Committee
The Planning Committee is made up of elected councillors. They review and make decisions about planning applications, granting or refusing them as appropriate.
Planning Committee meetings
Planning officers and other council staff attend meetings to advise the Committee and formally record the meeting. Other councillors may be present to speak on applications within their Ward, but are not allowed to vote. Any member of the public, including applicants, can attend to listen to the debate, and the press is usually present.
When applications are considered, the views of objectors and supporters are summarised in each report. In addition to this written report, in some circumstances members of the public, parish/town councils and agents can speak at meetings.
