Radiation

Radiation and masts

Despite extensive research over the past 60 years into the possible health effects of electromagnetic fields, there is no substantial evidence that exposure to low levels of radio frequency signals is harmful.

  • A person will be continually exposed to a low level of radiation throughout their life, this is perfectly normal and does not cause any health effects.
  • Most aerials are unlikely to cause an effect beyond a few meters around their base and the closest the public can get to a transmitter mast is 30m.
  • Operators of such masts and transmitters have to show a certificate of compliance with ICNIRP guidelines levels.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) are two bodies set up to ensure that exposure to radio frequency energy does not cause hazard to health.
