Excessive smoke and pollutants from vehicle exhausts are normally caused by poor maintenance.

This pollution can:

• Be harmful to human health
• Be harmful for the environment
• Lead to episodes of acid rain

How to report a smoky vehicle

Commercial vehicles

If you spot a commercial diesel vehicle emitting a lot of dark smoke, please ring the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency's (VOSA) national smoky vehicle hotline on: 0870 606 0440

They will need the following information:

• Registration number
• Type of vehicle
• Date seen
• Time seen
• Location seen
