Am I entitled to benefits?

If you are on a low income, you may be entitled to benefits. Depending on your income and circumstances, benefits can pay for up to 100 per cent of your council tax and rent.

Changes to benefit

From April 2011, the government is making changes to housing benefit that are likely to result in some benefit going down. To find out how this may affect you, see Changes to benefit from April 2011.

Housing benefit

You can claim housing benefit if you pay rent to the council or a private landlord. You cannot claim housing benefit if you live with, or have to pay rent to a close relative such as a parent, step-parent, son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter or their partners.

Council tax benefit

You can claim council tax benefit in addition to any discounts you may be eligible for. You can make a claim for council tax benefit if you or your partner:

  • Are working or self employed and on a low income
  • In receipt of state benefits
  • In receipt of pension credit
  • Pay rent to Wycombe District Council or a private landlord
  • Pay council tax to Wycombe District Council
  • Are sick or disabled
  • Have less than £16,000 (combined) savings, unless you are aged 60 and over and receive guarantee credit of pension credit
