Disability
A disability is a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long term effect on a person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
Physical impairments can affect mobility (need to use wheelchair, sticks, walking frame etc) and the senses (sight and hearing). Mental impairments include learning disabilities and mental illnesses.
By improving the understanding of disabilities and what barriers affect access to buildings, their surroundings and use of services, we can hope to achieve an accessible environment that everyone can enjoy.
Disability guidelines
We are keen to ensure that those people with a disability are treated fairly and equitably, taking the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act into account within all aspects of council functions.
In line with the requirements of the new Disability Equality Duty (part of the Disability Discrimination Act), a series of guidance notes have been produced. Each of the notes will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary so they will always be an up to date source of reference.
Guidance on the following is available to download below:
- making written information accessible
- selecting a venue
- dietary requirements
