Business rates recovery procedure

If you do not pay your business rates, we will need to start recovery procedures. If you are struggling to pay your rates, please do contact us as early as possible as we may be able to help before the recovery procedure begins. Help with paying your business rates.

Here's how the procedure works.

Only one reminder will normally be sent during the year. Reminders are not sent each time a payment is missed or is late. Once sent, if payment is not made or a further payment is missed, the right to pay by installments is lost. A Magistrates' Court summons will be issued for the balance of the year's charge.

If the amount is not paid by the court date, we will apply to the Magistrates' Court for a Liability Order with costs. If still unpaid or a subsequent arrangement has not been stuck to, the Liability Order will be passed to a bailiff and further costs added.
